Several charitable organizations in Pleasantville provide opportunities for teenagers to engage in community service. These organizations have a great need for volunteers, but in recent years, the number of teenage volunteers has significantly declined.
The Pleasantville School Board should take measures to increase the number of volunteers. Teachers, parents, and other community members agree that it is important for young people to learn the value of community service. Requiring high school students to engage in community service would provide much-needed assistance to worthy local charities and would also help young people understand the importance of giving back to their community. For this reason, the Pleasantville School Board should institute a program requiring students of Pleasantville High School to complete 40 hours of community service prior to graduation.
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on the assumptions and what the implications are if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
The argument states the need of student volunteers for community service by the Pleasantville school board. It wants the students to undertake this activity prior to graduation. At first the argument appears to be plausible, but it is rife with holes and assumptions which makes unconvincing.
Firstly the author emphasizes the need for student participation in community services and there is a decline now-a-days. There is nowhere mentioned the reason behind such a decline. Had the author specified this, it would have been easier to figure out the necessary solution for it.
Secondly the author speaks about taking measures to increase the number of students. No indication of such measures is clear from the passage. Which measures are worth taking to motivate the students to take up this task is not stated well. The practicality of the measures is not discussed by the author.
Thirdly, the author specifies the acceptance on part of the parents, teachers of engaging students in community service. The opinion on part of the students is missing. The reason for their reluctance is not justified by the author.
Furthermore, the students are required to complete 40 hours of community service. The author does not show any opinion of the students about such a decision. The student’s views should have been taken by the author. This may be one of the reasons why students are backtracking such a noble work.
If the author would have stated the above specifications, then the reader would have accepted the idea presented in the argument. Devoid of such clarifications, the statement by the author proves unwarranted and fallacious.
