All too often, companies hire outside consultants
to suggest ways for the company to operate more
efficiently. If companies were to spend more time
listening to their own employees, such consultants
would be unnecessary.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to
which you agree or disagree with these statements
and explain your reasoning for the position you take.
In developing and supporting your position, you
should consider ways in which the statements might
or might not hold true and explain how these
considerations shape your position.
The premise stated in the issue that 'if
companies spent more time listening to
their own employees, external consultants
would not be necessary' is interesting to
analyze. Understanding the tradeoff between
employing external consultants and
listening to their own employees is
something that every company would like to
keep in their mind.
External consultants by defination are not
a part of the company. Hence, they provide
an unbiased opinion about how the company
is operating and the corrective steps that
it should take to operate more efficiently.
Since the opinion is unbiased, it can be
very helpful to the management of the
company, who can then unertake corrective
actions to improve the efficiency.The
consultants analyze data, which is obtained
as a part of different processes like
conducting surveys, observing the
operations of the company, and many other
such means. By studying this data
thoroughly, they draw insights from it.
This helps them give recommendations to the
company on how the company is currently
functioning and how the efficiency of the
company can be improved. This is very
holistic and well-defined process, which
can yield useful results for the company.
However, every coin has two sides. In this
case too, even though the consultants have
a holistic process in place to understand
how the company is operating, they might
not get a view of how the company is
actually functioning internally. This is
where the employees' feedback can be very
useful. The employees are aware of the pain
points and positive points of the company
since this affects them directly on daily
basis. Also, the company could also save
money that it spends on employing these
external consultants.
However, a balance of both the things -
employing external consultants and
listening to own employees- is what is
required and conducive in this case. There
are examples where many companies conduct
'Voice of Employee' surveys, where the
employees provide their feedback and then
this data is analyzed by external
consultants to finally give a
recommendation on what the company should
and should not be doing.
Thus to conclude, companies should utilize
both the services of external consultants
and its own employees so that any company can work towards creating an optimum working environment.
