In any profession—business, politics, education, government—those in power should
step down after five years.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with
the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most
compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
Although it is true that some CEOs or people in higher positions in different fields would tend to let other people take over their positions, it is too extreme to say that any professions leaders should step down after five years. We need to consider different circumstances in different fields.
On the one hand, there’s no doubt to claim that some powerful people in the political field would need to step down after several years. For example, the president of the country has always been the most powerful leader to guide all citizens toward a better future. Even though it seems reasonable for a leader who does not want to step down after a few years, sometimes it could lead to adverse effects on the nation. The president of Pakistan stayed in his position for several years, but he refused to step down when it was the end of his term; his decision made a riot among citizens since they were separated in two parts, one part supported the president, the other against his continued presidency. Two parties fight against each other and even killed innocence during the fighting, which affected Pakistan’s economy and security. Therefore, sometimes if the powerful people of the country do not step down after years, it would lead to dangerous situations within the country.
On the other hand, if we put this claim in the business field, it might be untenable to ensure that the change of professions would be better for the company. Some people might argue that the change of leaders is necessary since younger people are more creative than them, and they would create a better future for the company. However, it’s not always been the truth; for example, Steve Jobs as Apple’s CEO and original creator of the company, never loses his creativity through his term. From iPhone to iPad, in Jobs’ term more than five years, he made so many benefits for Apple for being creative. His achievements shocked all people around the world since without him we would never use touch screen phones in that early time. If Apple’s leader changed, people might never see the new changes of the iPhone and iPad. Consequently, sometimes the step down of a leader in business is unnecessary since new leaders might not do better afterward.
Besides, if we consider this situation in the education field, it’s also disputable to say that the step down of powerful people would benefit the profession. To authenticate the power and achievement of the leader, we need to know their students that a professional leader in education is an excellent teacher. Fostering another professional takes time, so if the education leader steps down after five years, he will lose time to cultivate others. For instance, Confucius as a great leader in the education field in the past, his students were those who passed his philosophy and knowledge around the world, and Confucius cultivated them for more than five years. Their achievements brought significant benefits for the whole world, so without the long-term cultivation of students, the leader in educations would not present their power.
All in all, although in politics field the change of powerful people in the country would be better for its development, in business and education fields it would be inconvincible to claim that since leaders in these fields would keep up their power to lead these fields to bright futures.
