College and Universities should require all faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they take
Students go to college to be able to advance their career. Therefore, a student must obtain the adequate knowledge to begin their career. For a professor, in a university or college, to be able to successfully teach to students the information that is required for a person to succeed in a real life environment, the professor must have the experience in that profession.
Students go to college to help precipitate them in the career of their choice. For a student to obtain the knowledge necessary to begin their perspective career, the student must have an education provider that has an understanding of field they are teaching. For example, in health care programs such as nursing, it is important for the professors that teach the program to know what it is to be a nurse. For a professor to give the student in the nursing program the clinical knowledge, and application necessary to succeed as a nurse; the professor must have had to use the knowledge in their own practice as a Registered Nurse. This experience gives the teacher adequate examples to back up the theories they present to the students in the classroom. One might argue that theory alone is enough to succeed in the workplace; however, if a professor teaches a student how the theory applies in their work, the student is more likely to use the theory in their practice. Theory is the basis of knowledge in most fields that a student may major in so it is equally important as real life examples. However, if one can apply the theory to real life, then a student is more likely to remember the base of knowledge.
Students go to college with the intention of finding a job once the student obtains their degree. When a professor has experience in the field that they teach, that professor would understand how to navigate the career appropriately. If a professor has the knowledge of how the perspective job market is for that student, the professor can then help the student in obtaining their "dream job" at graduation. The professor can then help guide the student in the application process, and potentially give the student contact information of employers who could use that particular student's strengths. If the professor does not have experience in the field that he/she teaches, the professor would not be able to successfully guide the student in the appropriate career path.
Most students go to college with the hope to learn information that is tailored to their perspective career choice. A professor that has experience in this career choice will be able to teach students the information necessary to succeed in a real life environment.
