Government should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition.
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” well said by Martin Luther King Jr. Education is a fundamental right which empowers the human kind to lead a good life. Sincerely, the education in today’s world has been changed to more like a business to earn big profits rather than transferring knowledge in individual. In the late 19th century, the government has taken a step ahead to provide free primary education; but later revolutions had developed the idea of free or cost effective higher educational programs with an idea of ‘Education for all’. The law introduced by the Department of Education helped and gave freedom to a lot of needy people who wanted to study but could not afford the higher education. The opinion to provide free education to the needy people not only help in spreading literacy but also make our economy strong. The student admission to the university always comes through the qualification test, if a student has been admitted to any university by qualifying the admission criteria then that must be a deserving student who aspires for the dreams but cannot afford the tuition fees. Here, where the Government’s laws for easy education help.
The State and Federal Government programs for providing educational provisions to needy students allow them to choose their field of education freely. The Government has introduced new program the time to time as Barack Obama, announced the free education program in public universities. Hilary Clinton also introduced the plan for lower tuition fees in public universities. Grants, Scholarships and Gift financial-aids helps hundreds of students every year by supporting their education. Underneath, there are other different provisions that helps the students who need financial support.
Federal Pell Grants
Federal Supplements Educational Opportunity Grants
Teacher Educational Assistance for College and Higher Education Grants
Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants
These grants support the students’ higher study programs either by complete fees grants or proportional fees support. These grants consider different criteria of eligibility to justify the possibility of issuing grants for example, yearly income of an individual or family. Briefly, these measures of supporting the education of needy people can be a result of student’s enrollment into a good public or private university where they can pursue the course of their dreams. Maximum private universities, mainly the IVY league universities charge big amount which is not affordable by everyone.
There are some good universities which provide tuition free education to needy students as the ‘University of The People’, established in 2009 by Shai Reshef with an aim to solve the issue of tuition fees. This university provides free and accessible online platform for distance learning. This measure also helping many aspiring students to get a good employment after having a degree by paying minimal registration and exam fees.
Many Profit and non-profit organizations provide easy students loans but those loans cannot help much because of the high interest rates or non-payment of loan debt due to unemployment. Sometimes, the person has to pay the hard earned money in the loan debt only, which creates the distress. Numerous studies show that student loan schemes are failed when they go into bad debts for the issuer organizations. For instance, if a student took a loan to complete the Graduation program; but after the completion of the degree, he faced the unemployment for many years due to the industrial crisis and he started working with a coffee shop. This is the distressing situation as either non-payment of the student loan or pay through hard earned low salary, which will drain his savings. In recent news, the Secretary of Education Betsy Devos, urges to bring change in the student loan payment and calls the National Education Association to drop lawsuit that puts the financial aid of students in jeopardy; stating that this is what our American families need. With her efforts the Trump Administration forgive federal student loan debt totally or partially disables Veterans. This announcement proves a lot how Government’s education supporting policies assists needy people of our country.
On the other hand/Contrary to this, if there are no Government schemes to support the education, then individual with good family income can have the benefit of higher education but those who have low income cannot afford to pursue the degree. Pursuing higher education by self supporting income cannot completely help as the person has to work for long hours to pay tuition fees. This situation sometimes leads to the deserving students drop out of their school.
There are numerous benefits of having free education as should be mentioned, the high literacy rate in the country of those who possess higher education. It can help the economy to improve from poverty as high literacy rate can lead to more employed people. The economic growth through good buying power of individual. High rate of education will also result in low crime. Poor but deserving students can come forward and fulfill their dreams. Thus, by having a good educational system with supporting Government policies for the needy people better for the upliftment of the poor societies. In contrast to it, there could be some consequences of implementing such policies, for instance if the implementation of the policy is poor or there is discrimination in selection process during tuition free education programs by the universities. But above all of this, the right implementation and proper measures on functional grounds can help hundreds or thousands of poor people to complete their higher education.
Government’s free education policies proposals are always a highlight of the political campaigns. Few, politicians support the free education systems or a few support for making it either reasonable or either no changes. Everyone has their own views to look as this system but looking at the positive side of this helps us to understand the benefits of having free education system which assist poor families and also help a country for its development by educating its children. “The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object.” Truly stated by Thomas Jefferson that the people of our country is the great asset for its economy, by making them well educated and strong, we can make our foundations strong.
