It is in the best interest of every nation state that its population be as well-educated and as well-equipped to contribute to society as it can be, and universities play a vital role in that mission. But when a college education is prohibitively expensive, as we are seeing today in the United States, this not only impedes that goal but also reinforces structural inequalities. However, while I agree that higher education needs to be more financially accessible to more of the population, I disagree that free college tuition is the best solution to this problem. Rather, I see robust tuition assistance programs and a sliding scale payment system as a more appropriate remedy that would avoid some of the risky effects that a free college policy would certainly produce.

College today is extremely costly. In the past 30 years alone, the cost of tuition has skyrocketed from an average of about $5,000 per year to a heart-attack inducing $22,000. Whereas past generations boast about having been able to put themselves through college by working summers, most of today's middle and lower class youth cannot hope to independently afford the costs of attending university, even if they were working a full time job. Even with government or institutional financial aid and scholarships, the average student is also forced to take out loans. With millions of college graduates now burdened by trillions of dollars of student loan debt, we're seeing a whole generation financially handicapped and unable to fully participate in society and the economy. Not only do these alumni struggle to repay their loans for decades, but this dampens their ability to get a foothold in other important areas of life, like home ownership. Millenials are slower to get married, slower to buy homes, less likely to invest, less likely to take career risks such as starting their own businesses, and less likely to spend on luxury products and services, than their predecessors were. All of this severely hinders the country's economic growth. Taking this picture into account, it would seem the obvious solution would be to make college more affordable.

Making college more affordable would not only free millions from the life-damaging finacial risk of student loans, but would also have the added side effect of promoting greater social mobility and equality. In the United States, the high cost of college creates an additional barrier to success for students from low-income and minority neighborhoods. These students who stand the most to gain from higher education are the very same students whose families cannot afford to pay for their tuition. Potentially brilliant future scientists, engineers, and innovators miss out on the opportunity to develop their skills simply because their socioeconomic background denies them the means to enroll. In order to create more opportunity to rectify the effects that decades of discrimination and structural proverty have produced, we need to make sure that universities are accessible to these students. Lowering the financial barrier is necessary to do that.

Certainly, making university accessible to all students regardless of their background should be the goal in order to strengthen our workforce and enable more people to pursue their full potential. But does that mean the government should offer free education to any student who has been admitted? I would argue only if the student cannot otherwise afford it. Still, I think the solution needs to be a little more nuanced than that. I think it is important that government assistance programs operate on a sliding scale, where students pay based on their available means. Students who are able to pay the full cost should do so, while students who cannot afford it should receive tuition assistance from the government. I also think that universities and colleges have an important part to play in the solution, by lowering their (let's be honest) obscene price tags.

I will grant that having the government pay for students' tuition if they can't afford it would incur a huge cost to the country, on the scale of trillions of dollars. At the same time, this is money well invested. It will pay off in the long run, to have a greater number and greater diversity of highly educated citizens contributing to all parts of society. To finance a free college program like this would demand some creativity in how we generate funds for public programs, but I don't think it's anything that a tax hike on the super wealthy wouldn't fix!

Nelson Mandela, famous South African activist, liberator, and politician, once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." And it's true. There's a proven connection that with more education comes better health, better job opportunities, more financial stability, better quality of life, more political participation, and overall more happiness. Education is also the only way we as a society can continue to innovate and solve some of the greatest challenges we're facing like climate change, immigration, and poverty. We owe it to ourselves to invest as much as we can in higher education and ensure that lack of money is never a barrier to a student who otherwise has the ability the succeed. One part of the solution will be reducing the prohibitively high costs of education that are precluding the majority of people from being able to afford school without taking out loans. In parallel, a thoughtful government program offering tuition assistance on a sliding scale to any student who has been accepted but cannot afford to attend university, will help us achieve this vision.
