"A nation should require all its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer."
In the statement provided, the speaker asserts that in a nation, students should be required to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. I, personally, agree with this assertion and believe that there must be a basic common educational curriculum for students in schools across the nation, rather than having different type of curriculum in different schools.
A common national educational curriculum, in all the schools, would form a common base for all the school students, based on which they could be evaluated when they enter college. Since, all the students would have a common understanding and knowledge of what has been taught to them in school, it would be easy in college to teach them further in the fields they choose for their higher studies. If there would be different curriculum in different schools, it would be very difficult to assess the knowledge of students, since, different students might have different amount of knowledge in different subjects.
Also, a common national curriculum would contain the basic knowledge about different fields that all students must know prior to entering in their colleges. For example, the common school curriculum may consist basic language courses, courses about certain important rules and regulations that are followed all across the country, courses that include sports and exercises, courses that could teach the students about different geographical regions and weather conditions across their country, etc. Since, these kind of courses are required all across the country, it would be best to include these courses in the national educational curriculum. A student would require the knowledge of these courses, no matter in which college or place in the nation the students goes to.
However, there are also certain problems that may occur while determining national curriculums. For example, who should be responsible to determine which courses should be included in the national curriculum, how should the students evaluated based on these courses, etc. Also, sometimes schools would also require to teach their students that are necessary for them regionally. For example, a student who lives in a particulur region in the country should along with the knowledge of the national curriculum should also have the knowledge of certain things that are required regionally, like, regional languages, regional laws and rules, regional cultures, etc. A national curriculum would not include these courses that are required regionally, since, these courses might be important to some students who live in that region but not for all the students across the nation.
So, in conclusion, I would stick to my opinion that a national curriculum should be required for all school students, but along with that, schools should also be given the flexibility to add certain courses, that are required to the students regionally, in their curriculum along with the courses in the national curriculum.
