The figure 1 illustrates the proportion of world water use in three main sectors, agriculture, domestic and industry, in 2000. The figure 2 shows the specific patterns of water consumption in four countries in the same year.

As can be seen from the bar chart, in general, by far agriculture was the sector accounting for the highest proportion of water use, with nearly two thirds of the total (70%).
