Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
What other measures do you think might be effective?
It is true that traffic congestion and pollution are inevitable problems. However, I do not agree with the idea of accepting the raising petrol price only solve the traffic and pollution problems, I personally believe that various other measures would be more constructive.
Increasing petrol price may make drivers think twice about using their private cars. It might encourage the people to opt for public transportation instead, prevent them from making unnecessary trips or even carpooling if several people are going in the same direction at the same time. However, I doubt whether petrol producing countries or multinational provides would be satisfied with this arrangement. Government will also be reluctant to impose the measures as they are likely to be unpopular with consumers and they will feel the pressures from those with economic interest.
On the other hand, various other measures need to be combat traffic jams and pollution issues. In order to reduce traffic we should change our working habit. Internet can now be used to connect people, in this way more people could work from home, meeting can be held as video conferences and workers could be given flexible timetables. Another solution would be tax drivers. For example cities like London impose taxes on car users who drive the cars to the center during the peak times, this somewhat reduce the load and helps to raise the money for better public transport.
In conclusion, simply raising fuel price is not help the optimal approach to bring down the amount of traffic congestion and pollution. Alternatively other measures such as changing our work hobbits and impose congestion charges might be a better option.
