The pie chart illustrates the principal causes of worldwide land degradation, while the table compares percentages of land degraded by each cause in North America, Europe and Oceania throughout the 1990s.
It is noticeable that over-grazing is the most important cause of land degradation. During the 1990s, Europe had the highest proportion of land degraded, whereas North America had the lowest.
It can be seen from the pie chart that the second and third reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive are deforestation and over-cultivation, with 30% and 28% land degraded respectively...
