The position of women in society has changed markedly in the last twenty years. Many of the problems young people now experience, such as juvenile delinquency, arise from the fact that many married women now work and are not at home to care for their children.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
While the emancipation of women has benefitted the latter to a large extent, critics contend that other members of society, notably youngsters, have fared worse as a result. Indeed, juvenile delinquency and other problems faced by the younger generation have surged. Nevertheless, mothers and women in general should not be the only parties to blame for this worsening societal trend.
On one hand, although women are spending more hours at work, their house chores have failed to decrease over the years. Hence, due to their heavier work load, they are compelled to devote less quality time to their offspring. Mothers nowadays play a lesser role in the education of their children and often fail to inculcate them with the values and moral guidings which they previously received from their own mothers. As a result, attention-seeking teenagers often turn to their peers to compensate for the lack of parental care. However, friends may at times bear a negative influence through their use of drugs and cigarettes. Unfortunately, the current decline in parental supervision has further contributed to the rise in these problematic habits among teenagers. Thus, the progress of women in society has both direct and indirect negative repercussions on teens.
Nonetheless, other factors account for the degradation of morals among youngsters. Chief among them is the rapid propagation of mass media and the introduction of social media tools such as Facebook. As such, young people are more easily influenced by the negative examples set by their idols. Moreover, teachers have seen a restriction in their mode of operation as human activists fight for the advancement of children’s rights. As such, some people claim that the inability of teachers to employ corporal punishments has encouraged children to do as they please as their bad behaviors will most likely go unpunished. Therefore, other members of society also hold responsibility for the increase in youngsters’ issues.
To conclude, the change in women’s role in society over the past decades are not the sole contributor in the rise of youth-related troubles. Other parties and institutions should also share the blame.
