The pie chart above demonstrates the most important causes of land degradation in the world, represented by percentage. The table below shows how each form of land degradation affected the areas of North America, Europe and Oceania (which includes a large group of islands in the South Pacific, such as Australia and New Zealand) in the 1990s.
Between the most important causes that turn the land less productive are the over-grazing (represented by 35%), the deforestation (represented by 30%) and the over-cultivation (represented by 28%). The other causes are responsible for 7% of the reasons why agricultural land are degraded.
The region with a larger area of land degraded was Europe, with 23% in total, while Oceania had 13% in total and North America had just 5% in total. The deforestation corresponded to the highest percentage of land degraded in Europe. Most of the land degraded in Oceania was due to the over-grazing, while the over-cultivation was the most important cause in North America.
In summary, the three main causes of land degradation in the world during the 1990s had similar prevalences. Comparing North America, Europe and Oceania, the continent with a larger area of land degraded was Europe. Different from the others, Europe had deforestation as the most important cause of land degradation.
