Age discrimination occurs when a decision is made on the basis of a person’s age. In the workplace, these are most often decisions about being employed in the first place, winning promotions or being unfairly dismissed. Should discrimination against older workers be made illegal?
An Organization is because of its employees. Each employee contributes to the success of organization in their own way, irrespective of their age. Age shouldn’t be a factor to determine one’s success and efficiency. Age discrimination at work place should be termed as illegal irrespective it is against younger or older worker.
Every employee has something to offer, younger people have energy, innovative thinking, etc. while older people brings in year of expertise and diverse knowledge. Decision for employment and promotion shouldn’t be based on age but on employee’s hard work and efficiency. When things are going south in an organization, it’s the older employees with their vast experience of handling things in nerve wrecking situation along with younger employee’s innovative thinking and ready to do attitude that comes to the rescue.
In my organization, a project was getting delayed due to some unforeseen circumstances, then the older employees of the organization pitched in with their extensive knowledge of the product and helped younger employees to achieve the deadline. When comes the need of using cutting-edge technology it is the younger generation who needs to be looked upon.
Every organization should effectively utilize their employees based on their area of expertise rather than age. Age shouldn’t be a factor in making any decision. This boosts confidence in employees which in turn ultimately benefits the organization in the long run. If any organization is practicing age discrimination, legal action should be taken against them.
