It is clear that handheld sector by far had the highest turnover during the research period. Additionally, sales of games for three out of for platforms rose gradually except for console games.
In 2000, sales of handheld games was around 11 billion dollars, while console games earned roughly 6 million dollars. No figures were given for mobile phone and online games that year. Over the next four years, sales of handheld video games increased to around 15 million dollars, whereas the figure for console games declined steadily to 4 billion dollars. At the same time, online and mobile games started to become popular, both turnovers reached to around 3 billion dollars each.
In 2006, sales of handheld, online and mobile games reached peaks of 17, 9 and 7 billion dollars respectively. By contrast, the figure for console games dropped to its lowest point, at around 2.5 million dollars.
