The graphs illustrate the population in Japan since 1950. It also estimates trends up to 2055.
It is clear that the proportion of Japan’s population rose gradually until 2005, but will reduce dramatically after 2035. In contrast, the percentage of senior citizens is predicted to rocket in the future.
At the beginning of the period, the general population in Japan was the lowest as well as the percentage of elderly people, at 84,1 million and 4,1 million respectively. The former increased rapidly to 127,8 million in 2005, the highest point over the period. However, the number will decrease sharply to 110 million in 30 years later, then will reach the bottom in 2055, at 89,9 million, which is nearly the same as it was in 1950.
On the other hand, the percentage of older citizens in Japan saw a dramatic jump to 20% in 2005, almost five times higher than that in 1050 (4,9%). By 2055, it is expected that the figure will reach a peak of 36,5 million. In the future, more than a third of the population is the people aged over 65 in Japan.
