The graph illustrates the fluctuation in terms of how much it costs normally to buy a house in five big cities from 1990 to 2002. The numbers are made in comparison with 1989 prices.
Overall, it is clear that the house prices went up in most of the cities with the exception of Tokyo (Japan). Additionally, London and New York saw the most significant changes in the research period.
From 1990 to 1995, it was less expensive to buy a house in New York, Tokyo and London when compared to 1989. The percentage changes stood at -5%, -7% and – 7% respectively. In contrast, the prices in Madrid and Frankfurt went up a little bit with less than 3% in changes.
From 1996 to 2002, there was a dramatic increase in the proportion of change in average house price in London. The figure rose over 11% from 1989, making London the most costly place to live in among all five cities. The price in Tokyo went up modestly in comparison with the previous period. However, it was still 5% cheaper than the 1989 price.
