The chart below shows the number of trips made by children in one country in 1990 and 2020 to travel to and from school using different modes of transport

The chart shows the modes of transport used by children between the ages 5 to 12 in the years 1990 and 2010. car, walking, cycling and bus are the modes of transport mentioned in the chart.

At the first glance, it is clear that the number of children who walk to and from school is significantly reduced from 12 million to 6 million. Meanwhile car as a mode of transport has significantly increased its share from 4 million to 11 million. there are also seems to be a reduction of children in modes of transport which involves physical activity. cycling saw a decrease from 6 million in 1990 to 2 million in 2010. children who preferred a combination of walking and bus also decreased from 6 to 3 million. On the other hand the number of children who travelled via bus only saw a slight decrease of 2 million in this time span.

walking was the by far the most popular mode of transport in 1990. Come 2010, it has dropped to second place and conceded its place to car. cycling went from being the third most preferred mode of transport to the least prefered mode of transport.

Overall, the decrease in physical modes of transport can be attributed to there being increased number of cars.
