The given bar chart compares the information revealing the proportion of houses owned and rented in England and Wales over a period of 93 years from 1918 to 2011.
Looking from the overall perspective, it is readily apparent that at the start, the majority of the people were staying in the rented houses, compared to those who owned their own house. However, over time a reverse trend was witnessed in the context a house possession.
According to the given illustration, nearly 3 in every 4 households fell under the rented accommodation in 1918. In the next 14 years period, the rented demand got leveled off at 68%, before dipping below to only 3 rented houses out of a total five in 1961. After a decade, nearly half of the houses came in the rental category. However, with the passing years, a few fluctuations plummeted the rental proportion to just 45%.
On the contrary, in 1918, the owned households were just one-third of the rented ones. With time, the proportional rate rose steadily and significantly prior to attaining a similar percentage as of the rented houses in 1971. Thereafter, a dramatic rise stabilized the bar to a peak value of about 69% between 1991 and 2001. However, with a 3% decline, the percentage dipped down to 65% in 2011, which was up by nearly 20% as against the rented proportion.
