The chart illustrates the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales in a 93 year period from 1918 to 2011

Overall, the percentage of rented accommodation saw a downward trend over a long period of time. Meanwhile, there was an opposite trend observed by rented accommodation from 1918 to 2011.

As can be seen from the chart, the proportion of families that lives in rented houses in England and Wales reached a peak at 78% in 1918. After 21 years, the figure slightly decreased to 69% and remained unchanged until `953. Then, the rate plummeted dramatically from 1961 to 1991 and hit the lowest point of 31% in 2001. At the end of the period, the figure modestly rose to 35%

On the other hand, the proportion for households in owned accommodation initially emerge hovering 20%. Similar to the rate of rented t accommodation, there was also a stabilization in 1939 to 1953, the figure stayed unchanged at 31% before the bar chart saw significant growth to 69% at 2001. After that, the figure dropped slightly to 63% in the last year of the period
