The bar chart demonstrates the portion of owned and rental accomodation of couples in England and Wales since 1918 to 2011. As is shown by the chart, there was a noticeable movement from renting houses and apartments to owning them during this period.
Before 1971, mariage people were likely to live in a rented space. Start with 1918, there was more than 75% of householders in England and Wales deciding to rent a house or an apartment. Then, this percent kept slightly declining until it had the same proportion with the owner of accommodation in 1971.
On the other hand, after 1971, the preference of owning accommodation seemed to be get higher and higher. Specifically, the highest percent of British couples who pick to own their property was in 2001 at slightly under 70%. Even though the percentage dropped approximately 5% between 2001 and 2011, people tend to live in their own space.
