The bar chart illustrates the proportion of men and women employed by several different types of educational institutions in the United Kingdom, in 2010.
Overall, the number of female teachers exceeds that of male teachers in most educational settings. Nurseries and primary schools employ the most female and the least male teachers, whereas universities employed the least females and the most males. Colleges appear to employ both genders in equal proportions.
About 95% of female teachers work in nurseries and pre-schools, in comparison to only a little under 5% of males in this area. Similarly, primary schools also comprise about 90% of women teachers and about 10% of men teachers. This figure drastically changes for secondary school, containing both men and women at a little under and over 50%, respectively.
On the other hand, private training institutes employ about 52% of men and about 48% of women. Universities comprise the largest amount of male teachers, at around 70%, almost double that of female teachers. College, however, is composed of both male and female teachers equally, at 50% for both.
