The given chart illustrates the data about the proportion of the USA citizens who were aged 65 and above over a 100-year period from 1900 to 2000. An overall view indicates that the number of elderly people experienced an upward trend during this century.
Turning to age categories, the number of population aged 65-74 has increased smoothly, starting at 2.9 percent in 1900, reaching to 6.1 per cent in 1960. Between 1960 to 1970, the number of this group remained stable but then, continued its rising trend till 1990 by 7.3 per cent. In 2000, this figure has declined to 6.5 per cent.
Looking at two other age group, the proportion of people aged 75-84 has increased continuously from 1900 to 1990, however, this figure has fallen down in 2000 and reached 4.4 percent.
The third age group is consist of people who are 85 years old and higher. As can be seen, in all mention years, this group dedicated the lowest number but experienced a similar increasing tread the same as other groups. In 1900, the percentage of this group was only 0.2 per cent while it has increased to 1.5 percent in 2000.
