The line graphs depict the trends for percentage of households with electrical equipment and number of hours each week spent on washing clothes, preparing meals, and cleaning in one country over the period of 100 years.
It is clear that ownership of electrical appliances in household rose considerably between 1920 and 2019. While a dramatic fall can be seen in the amount of time spent doing housework every week.
In 1920, almost no households used refrigerators, while the proportion of homes with washing machines and vacuum cleaners were 40% and 30% respectively. However, over the following 40 years, the number of households with fridges rose significantly to 90% and the figures for washing machines and vacuum cleaners was the same at 70%. The ownership of two equipment rose steadily and reached 100% in 2000. By contrast, the percentage of households with washing machines dropped slightly in 1980 and increased to nearly 75% in 2019.
Looking at the number of hours of housework, in the year 1920 households spent 50 hours very week for these but this figure fell quickly to 20 hours in the 40-year period. By 2019, the amount of time per week had decreased just over 10 hours.
