Overall, the ownership of three appliances all increased after nearly a century. There was also a change in the rankings of the ownership of electrical appliances. Moreover, the time dedicated to housework in many households decreased significantly over the years.
The percentage of washing machine owners used to rank first in 1920 with 40%. Throughout nearly 100 years, the proportion of households owning washing machines experienced a slight fluctuation before reaching 70% in 2019, but still fell to last place with 30% less than the first. No one in 1920 used refrigerators until 2019, when the ownership percentage of this appliance surged dramatically to 100%, making it the most owned gadget. The appliance also tying at the first place with refrigerator was vacuum cleaner with the ownership soaring threefold from 30% to 100%.
In 1920, people would spend 50 hours per week doing the chores. However, throughout the years, this was decreased significantly from 50 to 10 hours in 2019.
