The charts below show the most popular films by genre for men and women and general ticket sales for different types of film in the USA in 2010.
The graphs illustrate the data about the most popular film genres in 2010 in the USA. But if the bar chart shows differences in male and female preferences, the pie chart highlights proportion by genre in box-office incomes.
Overall, what stans out from both diagrams is that most people enjoyed watching action films, especially men, while science fiction and western were not a great deal as popular as other genres.
Looking at the details, as for ticket sales, the number-one genre was action, with almost a half of annual box-office takings. It was approximately twice as much as sellers earned from screening comedies, which brought only 24%. At the same time, people were not so interested in other types of film. For example, ranked in third and fourth places were romantic comedy and thriller, with the income result of ticket sales at 12 and 10% respectively. This was followed by all other genres, with 5%.
With regard to gender preferences in watching films, action was the most popular among men, with 40%, whereas, according to women, it was ranked second on the list of the best types of film, with 25%. Another interesting point is that most women, namely a third, prefered romantic comedy, while the number of men who agreed to watch it, just one out of twenty, paled in comparison to woman. In addition, comedy was interesting for both genders equally, with 20% of people. The same situation was fixed for western, but it was half as popular as comedy, with just 10%.
