The pie charts provide information about the percentages of monolingual, bilingual and multilingual students at a particular university in the UK in the years 2000 and 2010.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the proportion of British students speaking an additional language was higher in 2010 compared to ten years before. Moreover, Spanish remained the most popular second language in both years.
In the year 2000, 30% of students spoke Spanish apart from English, which was twofold of French (15%) and three times higher than German (10%). This figure then proceeded to increase, reaching over one third ten years later. By contrast, French lost its popularity by 2010, falling to just 10%, while German remained constant.
With regard to the number of languages spoken, the proportion of monolinguals experienced a sharp decline and halved, dropping from one fifth in 2000 to one tenth over a decade. On the other hand, the percentages of those who knew two more languages, as well as another language which went unmentioned, both witnessed a 5% growth by the year 2010, making up 15% and 20%, respectively.
