The bar chart presents the average number of years participated in education and the the pie chart illustrates the proportions of the highest education degree of adults in Singapore over a ten-year period from 2000 to 2010. In general, the average number of years male adults spent in school was higher than female’s figures throughout the whole period and the percentages of each education level in 2010 changed considerably compared to those in 2000.
As is shown by the graph, the figures for men witnessed a relatively upwarding trend, while the numbers for women tend to stay unchanged over the period under study. The average number of years male adults undertake education rose gradually, from nearly 9 years in 2000 to roughly 12 in 2010. Different from that, the amount of years spent at school of female adults fluctuated around 8, even though it did not decline below that number.
In 2000, most of the adults being studied achieved high school qualification as their highest education level, as it contributed over 32% of the numbers. The second most common highest degree was secondary school graduation, followed by primary school qualification, university and master, just over 25%, 8,3% and 7,5% respectively. Many changes occurred in 2010, as the figure for university graduation was the highest, it was responsible for nearly 33% of the numbers, which rose significantly to its 2000’s level. Following the similar trend, the proportion of master qualification increased to over 30%. The remaining education levels experienced a drop in figures, with highschool being 19,55%, secondary school declining to 15,25% and primary school sinking to a low of 2,1%.
