The diagram illustrates the process of how hydroelectric power stations generate electricity.
At the first stage, the river is channeled to a high-level reservoir, which is placed behind the dam. In the bottom part of the dam there is an intake that allows flow of water to generate power during daytime. After that, it flows through a reversible turbine that is necessary to operate with generators in order to produce electricity. In the next step, the produced heat is transported to the National Grid by power lines.
However, during the night time, water from the low-level reservoir returns back into the high-level one. Reversible turbines, that operate during a day, pump water into high-level water reserves by flowing upstream through the intake section, which is closed for a night so as to prevent water leakage. The next day, the same process is repeated.
Overall, the process is separated into two parts where the first part generates electricity during the day, while the second one pumps used water back to reserves during the night.
