In general, hydroelectric power station is a reversible process that involves several stages from water in a river to electrical energy in the national grid.
At the beginning of the process, water in the river is kept in a high-level reservoir by a dam which can be opened or closed by time. At day, when an intake is opened, water in the high-level reservoir flows downward and rotates turbines in the power station located in lower-level position. In the subsequent step, reversible turbines in forward direction operate a generator which produces electricity leading by power line to the national grid. On the other hand, water after rotating turbines flows to a low-level reservoir to be stored for a reversing process.
Following that, at night, water in the low-level reservoir flows in a backward direction to the power station. The reversible turbines in the station take responsibility to pump water upstream into the high-level reservoir when the intake is closed.
