The diagram below shows how a hot air balloon ascends and descends

The flow charts show the layouts and mechanics of a common hot balloon.

Overall, the balloon consists of several mechanisms cooperating to produce the weight difference between internal and external air.

The balloon is covered by the envelope, which is made from numerous gores and panels sewed in together. The normal balloon shapes look like the upside-down teardrop shape. The top of the balloon usually has a vent of some sort, called "parachute vent" which enables the pilot to release and control hot air. The envelope is fastened to the basket by ropes, and the burner is hung above the basket. There are a variety of propane cylinders which is put on the basket to providing fuel for this process.

The burner will ignite the mixture of propane and air to propel the hot air into the envelope. Increasing the air temperature inside the envelope makes it less dense and lighter than the surrounding air. Therefore, the balloon floats because of the buoyant force exerted on it.
