The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding.
The process illustrates how different between protecting houses from flooding in where has a stopbank and without stopbank. Overall, the gap from ground level to the house floor level, which is equiped stopbank, is shorter than the other.
As can be seen from the first process, the stopbank, which is higher by freeboard (300mm) than 100-year flood level, works to prevent water overflowing from river into the internal ponding. In addition, internal runoff especially rainwater flows into internal ponding and escapes to the river through a system of floodgate and berm, which has function on draining water in one direction.
Turning to the aspect of both sides, it is clear that the height of building without stopbank have to be lifted up by a freeboard to the 100-year flood which is called ponding level. Moreover, the level of water in internal ponding is higher than where has a stopbank.
