The first diagram shows the reproductive cycle of the silk worm and the stages for producing silk. The silk worm is the primary source of this material.
Overall, the raw material required to create silk thread takes a longer time than the fabric itself. While the worm is born out after a few months , the thread can be extracted rather soon.
A worm is born out of an egg laid by the moth .The gestation period is about ten days. Once the egg hatches, it becomes a larva which feeds on mulberry leaf for about two to three fortnights. This results in an outer cover , which is present all over its body and it is called as the cocoon. It takes about three to four days for this structure to become like a shell that engulfs the insect. After sixteen days this formation opens and a full grown moth is developed.
It is the cocoon that serves as the base product for creating silk. While form an egg to become a moth takes some months, a cocoon to yield silk thread requires a few procedures only. Once it is selected, the cocoon needs to be boiled, and unwound into silk thread. Length of the thread varies between a range of 300 to 900 metres. It is then twisted and dyed before being woven.
