The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
The two charts illustrate proportions of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by various sources in an average Australian household.
Overall, the most striking feature is that the percentage of gas emissions tends to be larger than that of energy utilization for most sources, with the exception of heating. Also, it is noticeable that cooling and lighting have the smallest figures in both charts.
Regarding energy consumption, heating accounts for the vast bulk of energy consumption (over 40%), followed by water heating at 30%. Other appliances typically consumed 15% of total energy, which is more than double the amount used by refrigeration. Energy consumption by cooling and lighting is negligible.
By contrast, turning to domestic emissions of greenhouse gas, while water heating is the main source, taking up about one-third of the total emitted amount, the figure for heating stands at only 15%. Other appliances are responsible for over one-fourth of all emissions combined and refrigeration makes up for half that. The proportions for cooling and lighting remain significantly smaller, making up for 3% and 8%, respectively.
