The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.
The illustration provides us with information in regards to the fuel consumption in the USA, starting from 1980 to 2012, a projection is then made to 2030. As shown, petrol and oil were used extensively throughout the USA with 35q units in 1980 and rising to 42q units in 2012.
Despite initial fluctuations between 1980 to 1994, petrol and oil consumption has been steadily rising since 1995 and is expected to hit 47q in 2030. Coal and natural gas, however, are neck to neck, both initiating at 20q and 15q respectively in 1980. Both met at an equal rate between the years 1985 and 1990 after gas took a minor dip while coal increased gradually. Both have been fluctuating from 1990 till 2016, and experts predict coal will hit 45q in the year 2030 while gas will plateau at 23q.
Furthermore, nuclear, solar/wind and hydrothermal started as equals at 3q. Nuclear and solar/wind rose gradually to 6q and 4q respectively in 2010 while hydropower rose and fell back to 3q and is expected to remain stagnant till 2030. Nuclear and solar/wind, however, will likely increase gradually till the year 2030.
In conclusion, the USA will most likely continue relying on fossil fuels until the distant future with little attention given to sustainable energy.
