The graph compares the energy consumption of six types of energy sources in the period from 1980 to 2008 in the US and makes a prediction until 2030.
Overall, petrol and oil consumption predominated the energy use during the 28 years and is predicted to see an upward trend in the following 28 years. While the consumption of nuclear, solar/wind, and hydropower was the lowest and remained basically unchanged.
The consumption of natural gas was about 4 quadrillion units higher than the use of coal at the beginning in 1980, but there was a dramatic fall in the use of natural oil in the following 5 years which was the same as the petrol and oil consumption. Later the consumption of coal gradually exceeded the use of natural gas though there was a small rebound from 2000 to 2005. It is predicted that the consumption of natural oil will level off at about 22 quadrillion units while the consumption of coal records a significant growth.
The consumption of the three clean energies was at a same low degree in 1980 and rose at a slow pace in the following 10 years. Later the consumption of nuclear and solar/wind increased slowly while the hydropower consumption remained a gradual fall. It is predicted that the consumption of these three types of energy will become virtually unchanged in the following years.
