The graph compares the amount of goods delivery in the UK during the period from 1974 to 2002 by four types of transport.
It is clear from the graph that the number of goods transported by road was the largest while that by pipeline was the lowest over the 28 years. Overall speaking, the quantity delivered by road, water and pipeline climbed almost 20 million tonnes in the past 28 years while the quantity transported by rail remained virtually unchanged at 40 million tonnes.
In 1974 the quantity transported by water is slightly lower than that by rail, but after four years’ development, it has exceeded the quantity transported by rail and then had a dramatic increase from 1978 to 1982. The quantity delivered by rail kept declining from 1978 to 1994 with a slight rising from 1984 to 1988. In around 1994, the amount delivered by rail and road had sora growth and reached 40 million tonnes and 100 million tonnes respectively.
The quantity transported by pipeline was almost naught at the beginning of 1974, which continued climbing steadily in the following years. The rising speed gradually slowed down and until near 1994, it stopped growing and leveled off at about 20 million tonnes.
