The chart demonstrates changes in the prices of the world food and oil over a period of 12 years, from 2000 to 2011.
Overall, it is clear that the food and oil prices both increased with a strong correlation of 93.6%, indicating a similar trend in changes between two commodities.
As displayed in the graph, in 2000, the food price index was 90 points and average oil price was around $30 per barrel. Over the next four years, the prices remained relatively stable until they started to rise gradually in 2004. From 2004 to 2007, the prices was doubled, with food and oil prices were at 130 points and $60 per barrel respectively.
After that, it went up dramatically within just a year and a half, reaching a peak of 220 points for food price and $130 for average oil price. However, the prices quickly experienced a downfall in 2009 to only one-half of the peak period. Finally, in the last two years, food and oil prices recovered and rose once again to 170 points and $140 per barrel accordingly
