The diagram compares the number of visitors from abroad to different regions of one
country in Europe over the period 1987 to 2007.
Overall, it is clear that the figures saw an increase during most of the period, despite
some fluctuations. The coast, and the lakes and mountains were the areas most visited by
overseas tourists.
In 1987, there were 40,000 overseas visitors to the coast. This was higher than the
number who visited Series 3 or the lakes and mountains, at 20,000 and 10,000
respectively. By 2002, overseas visitor numbers to the coast had risen to 62,000.
However, this was overtaken by the figure for those who visited the lakes and mountains,
which increased dramatically to reach a peak of 70,000. The numbers visiting Series 3
fluctuated, reaching about 25,000 in 2002.
Between 2002 and 2007, there was a steady decline in overseas visitors to the lakes and
mountains, falling to around 66,000 at the end of the period. After peaking at 70,000
during these years, the number of overseas visitors to the coast decreased to 55,000 in
2007. In contrast, overseas visitor numbers to Series 3 witnessed a rise to reach a peak of
35,000 in 2007
