The line graph illustrates the percentage of people aged over 65 for a period of 100 years in three different countries.
It is obvious that the proportion of elderly people in all three countries increases in that time period. Also Japan is expected to experience the most dramatic growth in percentage of people over 65 years old.
In 1940, about 9% of Americans aged more than 65 years, while the number for Swedish people is 7% and it is 5% for Japanese. During the next 60 years, the percentage of elderly people in the US and Sweden rose smoothly. However the rate remains almost the same for Japan until the early 2000s.
Looking into the future, a sharp growth in the proportion of elderly people is predicted for Japan with a jump of more than 25% between 2030 and 2040. By 2040, it is forecasted that around 27% of Japanese will be 65 or more, while the figure for Sweden and the US will be a little bit more than about 25% and 23% respectively.
