the graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in the three different countries.
The line graph compares three different countries Japan, Sweden and The USA in terms of the percentages of people with 65 and over years old over a period of a century, between 1940 and 2040.
It is clear that the number of elderly people has been slightly increasing over period shown. Japan had the lowest proportion of population aged 65 and over among these three countries until now, however it is estimated that this country will have the highest percentage of this category of people after 2030 compared with two other countries.
In 1940, Japan had the lowest percentage of the elderly with just 5% of its population. These figures for Sweden and the USA were 7% and 9% respectively. Japan saw a slight decrease of 2% and reached a low of 3% in 1960 and then this figure maintain the same level for a period of 15 years. The number of the Japanese elderly have started to increase since 1990 and it has been continuing its upward trend until now. It is expected that this country will see a dramatic rise in 2030 which will place it over two other countries in terms of the percentage of elderly people.
On the other hand, Sweden and the USA had been having the same trend and both of them went up slightly from 1940 to 1980 and reached almost 15% .While Sweden then had a sharp increase which reached it to 20% in 2018 and therefore it overtook the USA in 1998, the USA keep its level for 40 years, until 2020. It is anticipated that the USA will see a considerable rise over next 40 years. The figures which are estimated to will be registered by Japan, Sweden and the USA in 2040 are 27%, 25% and 23% respectively.
