The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974
and 2002.
The line graph reveals statistics about the number of goods delivered by various types of transport in the United Kingdom from 1974 to 2002.
Looking from an overall perspective, the quantities of goods transported by all forms saw an upward trajectory, except for railways, which oscillated. Furthermore, the road was the most popular type of delivery in every year of the period.
At the beginning point, road and pipeline showed the highest and lowest figures, respectively. In 1974, about 70 million tonnes of goods were carried by road. Over the next 28 years, this category claimed a gradual increase to around 100 million tonnes. The pipeline, however, experienced a different pattern. It started at about 5 million tonnes. After having a sharp growth to approximately 25 million tonnes, this figure reached a plateau in 8 years later. Then, it declined slightly and remained constant at 20 million tonnes.
Water and railway began at the same levels of almost 40 million tonnes but showed reverse trends afterward. The quantities of goods ferried by water climbed steadily to just under 60 million tonnes in 1994, which was followed by a sudden drop to its minimum point at 50 in 1998. Finally, it grew by 15 million tonnes in 2002. The railways, in contrast, had some fluctuations and finished at the same point as the beginning.
