The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The given line graph gives information about the amount of UK goods transported by four types of transportation namely road, water, rail, and pipeline over a period of 28 years starting from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, as can be seen from the graph, it is clear that an upward trend was seen in both these types of goods transported in the UK. In addition, the number of products shipped on the road was by far the highest during the research period, while the opposite was true for the figure for Pipeland.
In 1974, the amount of merchandise transported by road in the UK was the highest, at roughly 72 million tonnes, while the figure for rail was significantly lower, at approximately 40 million tonnes. Meanwhile, there were about 39 and 4 million tonnes of goods moved by water transportation and pipeline transportation respectively.
In 2002, the quantity of goods transported in the UK noticeably rose by 27 million tonnes to 99 million tonnes and remained the highest figure in the chart. At the same time, after fluctuating slowly, there was a slight rise to 41 million tonnes in the figure for rail, while the amount of UK products shipped by pipeline gradually increased to about 22 million tonnes. Additionally, water’s figure witnessed a remarkable climb of 26 million tonnes to 65 million tonnes.
