The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph compares the amounts of goods delivered in the UK in terms of four different modes of transport over the twenty-eighth-year period, from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, it is noteworthy that road was responsible for the transportation of most goods. In addition, the quantities of goods shipped by water surpassed those by rail to become the second highest by the end of the period shown.
In 1974, the amount of goods delivered by road stood at about 70 million tonnes, which was highest, compared to those by rail, at 40 million tonnes. From 1974 to 1990, while this figure for road delivery increased to nearly 80 million tonnes, there was a gradual decline of approximately 30 million tonnes in that of rail one in 1986, before rising to roughly 35 million tonnes in the year 1990. Over the next 12 years, both figures witnessed an upward trend of around 90 million and 40 million tonnes respectively.
At the beginning of the period shown, water took charge of the transportation of about 30 million tonnes, as opposed to the quantities of goods shipped by pipeline, at only around 5 million tonnes, which meant that this figure for pipeline expression was lowest among all. Over the period of 16 years, the importance of both modes of transport went up to nearly 60 million and around 22 million tonnes in the respective order mentioned. From 1990 to 1994, the figure for water remained relatively unchanged, whereas that of pipeline saw a slight decrease to 20 million tonnes. By the end of the period shown, there was a marginal fall of approximately 50 million tonnes in the amounts of goods expressed by water, before rising to more than 60 million tonnes. In the meantime, the figure for pipeline stabilized at 20 million tonnes.
