In 1974, the road was the main shipment of goods in the UK, transferring around 70 tonnes. Meanwhile, the figures for waterways and railways were comparatively lower, at around 38 tonnes and 40 tonnes, respectively. In the meanwhile, the quantity of goods was shipped by pipeline the least, with merely 5 tonnes.
Between 1974 and 2002, the large number of products are primarily delivered via roads and remained the most favored means of transport. Water transport and railroads shared the second position at the beginning of the period, but transporting goods by water rose continually to nearly 70 tonnes whereas rail lines did not see much difference over the time given. The pipeline, however, increased slightly and reached the plateau in 1994 with 20 tonnes of goods transported.
