The line graph illustrates the percentage of recycling and the amount of tons of waste recovery in the U.S. between 1960 and 2011.

Overall, both figures for percent recycling and waste recovery increased gradually from 1960 to 1985, since 1985 there was a significant rise in waste recovery.

In 1960, 5.6 million tons of waste was recycled, and the figure for recover waste went up steadily in the next 25 years reaching at 16.7 tons. From 1985 to 1995, waste recovery’s figure increased sharply to reach at 55.8 tons. After 1995, the amount of waste recovery raised at a slower rate, touching the hightest point at 86.9 tons in 2011.

Similarly, the percentage of recycling in the U.S. increased gradually after a slight decrease by 0.2% in 1965, and went up steadily to 10.1% in 2985. From 1985 to 1995, the figure increased dramatically by about 15.6% to25.7%, and then at a slower rate over the next 15 years until it reached a peak of 24.7% in 2011.
