The graph illustrates the amount of spreads consumed from 1981 to 2007.
The line graph compares the quantity of margarine, butter, low-fat and reduced spreads consumed between 1981 and 2007. The quantities are measures on grams.
From the figures, it can be inferred that there was a significant decline in the consumption of margarine and butter and a marked growth in the use of low-fat and reduced spreads over the period 1981 to 2007.
Butter was the most popular fat in the beginning of the period. However, apart from a brief rise from 1981 to 1986 to reach the peak at 160 grams per person per week, the consumption of butter went down gradually over the next 26 years to finish at just 50 grams. The consumption of margarine began lower than that of butter at 90 grams. The first excess in quantity of margarine compared with that of butter was in 1991, but after 1996 there was a steady downward trend in the figure of consumed which seem set to continue.
Low-fat spreads was introduced in 1996 and the biggest rise was seen in their use from that time , to over 80 grams. Although in 2001, they were more than either types of fat, the consumption decreased continually to finish at 40 grams.
