IELTS Academic test requires you to write a summary of at least 150 words in response to a particular graph (bar, line or pie graph), table, chart, or process (how something works, how something is done). This task tests your ability to select and report the main features, to describe and compare data, identify significance and trends in factual information, or describe a process.

The diagram shows how a water cycle works and illustrates how the water recycles from sea to the atmosphere, from the atmosphere to land, and finally from land back to the sea.

The process starts with evaporation of water from the sea, from trees, in a process called transpiration, and from lakes and rivers. The wind carries the water vapours to the mainland. It is here the water vapours cool down and condense forming clouds. When these clouds further cool down, the water vapours convert back to water and precipitate down onto the surface of the earth in the form of rain.

Some of the rain water that falls down on the surface passes through the porous layers of rock present beneath the surface of land. This water flows underground and eventually flows into lakes, rivers and seas. Water from the rivers and lakes joins together to eventually drain into the sea. Thus, the water ends up where it started from forming a cycle which repeats itself.
