Adding a high dose of sugar in processed food and drinking products leads to various health related issues. Many suggest that making these items more expensive we can cut down the amount of sugar consumption. In my opinion, I agree with this view, however, besides this, creating public awareness regarding the negative effects of sugary foods might help to achieve the desired outcome faster.
Firstly, lowering the amount of sugar consumption can be achieved by increasing the price of processed foods and beverages, because people tend to decrease the amount of utilisation of any product, if the price goes high, particularly when it is a non-essential item . In most cases, manufactured foods and drinks are just ready made alternatives to fresh fruits and juices and therefore adding extra cost might encourage people to search for a cheaper food source. For example, in 1998, m&m Company of USA, increased the price of his chocolates, and as a result this company lost a significant amount of market share, while the cheaper alternatives flourished due to the comparability in price. On the other hand, another approach that could be proven practical is to educate the population about the dangerous consequences of sugar rich foods. Such initiatives and campaigns can make people see the bigger picture, which will enable them to comprehend the scenario more vividly. Moreover,If information and knowledge are available, self realisation will start to generate rapidly, and more often than not, self awareness drives people more effectively than any other calculative strategy. To illustrate, during the Corona pandemic, at the beginning, people were more reluctant to get vaccinated, but when the public were made aware of the fact that vaccines were assisting to decrease the mortality rate, the numbers of vaccinated people climbed higher dramatically.
To sum up, there could be many viable options for cutting sugar intake. However, I think making the sugar rich product a pricey option, and having people realise the health hazards of high sugar intake, could be the most effective and fruitful attempts.
