The pie chart below shows the main reason why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.
The pie chart demonstrates the main reasons leading to global land degradation while the table displays how three regions were affected by these causes during the 1990s. Overall, it can be seen clearly that over-grazing, forest destruction and over-cultivation are the main factors of reducing land productivity in the world. Besides, Europe was the region which had the highest percentage of degraded land. Regarding the pie chart, 35% of the world’s degraded land was responsible for the degradation of 30% of land in the world. Over-cultivation closed behind at 28% while other factors accounted for 7% of the damage.
Of the three regions, Europe had the greatest proportion of degraded land in the 1990s, which captured 23% in total and turned into the top spot. The primary factor was deforestation, at 9.8%. Compared to the figure of Oceania, which was the second affected region consisting of 13% in total land degradation, this was mostly caused by over-gazing, at 11.3%. North America had the lowest figure of land degradation, only a total of 5% of the land in this region was damaged and mainly because of over-cultivation, responsible for 3.3%.
