The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The given pie chart depicts the major reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. In addition to this the given table illustrates the causes of land degradation in North America, Europe and Oceania during the 1990s in percentage. It also displays the cause of degradation for each reason as well.

It is evident from the pie chart that over-grazing, over-cultivatioin and deforestation are the major factors for the degradation of land. Almost all these factors are equally responsible for the degradation of land. Among all the 3 factors over-grazing is the main reason with 35% of contribution to the land degradation. While, over-grazing is the second highest factor with 30% of contribution followed by over-cultivation’s 28%. The remaining 7% of land degradation is because of other factors.

The table shows that Europe had the utmost land degradation of all 3 countries with 23 % of land degradation during the 1990s. Whereas, Ocenaia and North America had 13% and 5% of total land degraded. In Europe, all the major factors discussed had played an equal role but deforestation played the major role in the land degradation. Whereas, deforestation had only 0.2 % of contribution to the total land degradation in North america with over-cultivation being the main reason for the degradation. This is contrast to the Oceania’s 0% of land degradation caused by over-cultivation. In Oceania over-grazing had the highest part in land-degradation.
